La Organización de las Naciones Unidas ONU, mediante Resolución 64/169 ha proclamado el  2011 Año Internacional de los Afrodescendientes, en consecuencia la Primera Cumbre Mundial de Afrodescendientes permitirá realizar un análisis crítico que haga posible  evaluar las condiciones socioeconómicas de las poblaciones Afrodescendientes, los logros alcanzados con base en la implementación de los tratados internacionales, y no menos importante, un análisis de la situación del movimiento social Afrodescendiente diez años después de la conferencia de Durban. De la misma manera, el análisis propuesto llevará al establecimiento consensuado de una serie de estrategias, planes y acciones que redunden en el establecimiento de las bases para el desarrollo integral sostenible con equidad e identidad de las poblaciones afrodescendientes en el corto, mediano y largo plazo.

Under the pretense that “voter fraud” (which is basically nonexistent) is a serious problem, conservative governors and state legislatures are pushing through laws that severely limit access to the vote. from the elimination of same-day voter registration to unduly strict voter ID requirements. These may not sound like that big of a deal. But when it comes to on-the-ground voting patterns, they can substantially impact turnout.
